Socrates Basbas is a Professor in the School of Rural and Surveying Engineering at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) in Greece. He is also the Director of the Laboratory of Transportation Planning, Transportation Engineering & Highway Engineering in the same School. He received his 5-year degree in Rural & Surveying Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (1985), his Master of Science (MSc) in Transportation Planning and Engineering from the Institute for Transport Studies (ITS), University of Leeds, UK (1986), and his PhD from the School of Civil Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (1997). He was member of the Senate of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2000-2001), Director of the Department of Transportation & Hydraulic Engineering (2021-2023) and Deputy Director of the Postgraduate Program “Planning and Management of Sustainable Infrastructures and Systems”, School of Rural & Surveying Engineering (2018-2022). He is an Academic Advisor in the Department of Transportation & Hydraulic Engineering. He has developed significant research and teaching activity in the following fields: Organization and Management of Traffic and Parking, Transportation Planning, Transportation Engineering, Analysis of Transport Systems, Interaction of Land Use and Transport, Sustainable Urban Mobility, Cycling, E-scooters, Pedestrians, Transport Economics, Road Safety, Public Transport. He serves as the coordinator of the following undergraduate courses in the School of Rural & Surveying Engineering: Transportation Engineering (5th Semester), Transportation Planning (6th Semester), Transport Economics (7th Semester), Design of Urban Transport Infrastructure and Mass Transportation Systems (9th Semester). He is the author or co-author of more than 430 scientific papers at national / international conferences and international scientific journals. He has participated in more than 80 research projects (national / European) and in more than 50 transportation design projects. He serves as an Editorial Board member in the scientific journals: Societal Impacts (ELSEVIER), Discover Cities (SPRINGER), Sustainability, Section “Sustainable Urban and Rural Development, (MDPI), Journal of Advanced Transportation (WILEY), International Journal of Transport Development and Integration (IIETA), International Journal of Sustainable Development and Planning (IIETA). He has served as a peer reviewer in more than 800 scientific papers in 74 international journals.
